Kerala Waterfalls

Waterfalls everywhere are dependant on rainfall, so it is obvious that monsoon seasons will see them at their most spectacular, cascading over rocks, sending a mist of spray high into the air. Kerala has many waterfalls, here are some that are accessable on the tourist route without long treks or climbs.

Athirapilly waterfalls

Athirapilly waterfalls in Thissur district are the biggest in Kerala, and their beauty brings movie companies here to shoot. From the Soliyar high ranges, the water flows down to the Chalakudi river, to the falls where it plunges 80ft over rocks to rejoin the river below.

Valara Waterfalls is only 4 kms from Cheeyappara and is also a popular picnic and walking spot.

Thusharagiri waterfalls

Thusharagiri waterfalls are in the Kozikhode district of north Kerala on the Chalippuzha river. Of the three falls, Thenpara, the highest falls from 75 mt, creating a snowy effect which gives them their Malayalam name. The nearest town is Kodencherry from where there is easy access for trekking, rock climbing and wildlife reserves.

Thommankuthu waterfalls

Thommankuthu falls are 18km from Thodupuzha in Kerala’s Idduki district, cascading over seven steps of massive rocks into the Chalakudi river. The surrounding area of forests and hills is ideal for trekking.

Attukal waterfalls

Attukal waterfalls, 9km from the famous hill station at Munnar, is a popular picnic spot with tourists and locals, the milky cascades are a beautiful sight, but it is not suitable for bathing due to an element of danger. Pullivasal Dam is not far from here, Kerala’s first hydro electric project and has a beauty of it,s own.

Cheeyappara waterfalls

Cheeyappara waterfall is on the Cochin-Madurai highway between Neriamangalam and Adimali. Surrounded by forests and good walking country, the seven levels that the water rushes down make a memorable sight.

Palaruvi waterfalls

Palaruvi waterfalls are found in the district of Kollam at Thenmala and fall from a height of 300ft. Bathing is allowed here with a separate spot for women and children, guards ensure that there is no alcohol use. Ayurvedic doctors recommend bathing here for the properties of the water.
