Chalakudy river flows from the Anamudi mountains of the Western Ghats, through Vazhachal Forest to the Arabian sea. In the district of Thrissur, the Athirapilly waterfalls plunge over rocks in three cascades , 24 mts to the river bed below.
The surrounding forest is the only location where all four species of Indian hornbill are found together. The wildlife Trust of India has recommended that the area become a sanctuary due to a successful elephant conservation project and the presence of leopard, bison, sambar, tiger and lion tailed macaque.
