In the district of Thrissur, Guruvayoor is an important Hindu holy city, and the Gurvayoor Sree Krishna Temple is said by legend to be 5000 years old. Ekadasi, on the eleventh day of each lunar fortnight is auspicious for Hindu,s, and the Vrishchika Ekadasi is special for Guruvayoor Temple. A memorial for Gajarajan Kesavan is held, the lead elephant places a wreath at the statue of Kesavan while the other elephants stand in honour. There is dawn to dusk pooja, and a grand elephant procession. Each year there is the Chembai Sangeetholsavam, an important Carnatic music festival featuring 2000-2500 musicians, culminating on Guruvayoor Ekadasi day with the musicians singing favourite songs.
